| Cape Epic: Platt and Sahm win the world's most important stage race. |
 |
Karl Platt and Stefan Sahm won the Cape Epic mountain bike race again in 2010.
This is the third time now that the Team BULLS riders, supported by SIGMA SPORT®, have won the premier mountain bike stage race in the world in South Africa.
Six hundred teams started in the race of around 722 kilometers and 14,635 vertical meters, but only 450 of them managed to complete the whole distance of 8 stages, cycled from 21 to 28 March 2010 in the area around Capetown.
The race didn't start well though for either of the Team BULLS riders. Stefan Sahm, plagued by cramp, and Karl Platt achieved fourth place in the first stage from Diemersfontein to Ceres.
Despite 7 kilometers of bumpy sleepers just before the finish line which are difficult to ride with hardtails, the two riders were satisfied with their result.
In the 2nd stage the two BULLS fought their way to second place which also meant second place overall.
Day three was vexing.
While in the lead, four minutes were lost following the leading motorcycles which took a false descent.
Unfazed, Platt and Sahm came in third and took the Leaders' Jersey.
Stefan Sahm and Karl Platt leading at "halftime" and able to take 2nd place in stage 4 from Ceres to Worcester and increase their lead to six minutes in the overall ranking followed by Evans and Lakata in 2nd place, commented on the result with the remark "...now the fight really starts."
With Karl Platt going strong always riding point and Stefan Sahm ambitious enough never to lose sight of his team mate's rear wheel, the two marathon specialists fought their way to 2nd place again in stage 5.
So nothing changed in the overall ranking and the BULLS started into the last three stages as leaders.
Following a tie for 2nd place together with Stauder and Sander on the stage from Worcester to Oak Valley, Platt and Sahm - despite a little crash just before the finish line of stage 7 - increased their lead to 11 minutes in front of the team in second place.
On the 8th and final stage the Team BULLS riders wrapped up their victory.
"We had really good legs today", enthused Stefan.
"While we were in 3rd place towards the end of the race my chain jammed between the sprocket and the spokes. One link got bent so we had to change the chain. The time we lost could no longer be made good
so we just rode the rest of the stage relaxed and enjoyed the final kilometers to Cape Epic."
SIGMA SPORT® congratulates the winners Karl Platt and Stefan Sahm on winning again in South Africa and wishes Team BULLS great success for the remaining season.
